This article considers if it would be possible to use productive reflection to form the basis of a more effective way of demonstrating the value of prior and experiential learning to the employer whilst maintaining the interests of the learner and the university.The article describes the needs of the three parties, employee/learner, employer and university, in relation to work based learning and recognition of prior learning and contends that experience based work place learning needs to show learning outcomes that are equivalent to those for programmes taught within universities. Productive reflection focuses on learning through process rather than focusing on the output. Structured reflective practice can result in improvements to organisational functioning. The article contemplates both individual and collective reflection as learning tools. Show less
